So, my first post on my new blog. I wish I had more time to write but with teaching full time, going to school full time this semester, serving as a graduate assistant and acting as the LAI Graduate Student Association president in addition to doing my most important job, being a mom, time is stretched pretty tight.
I wanted to start writing a blog on my experiences in a middle school classroom. After my job at a local high school was cut at the end of last school year, I was worried I wouldn't fit in in a middle school environment. I think I was wrong.
I have discovered two things. 8th graders are Seniors in high school just a few years removed. Some of the same silliness pervades and "senioritis" seems to be common. They are ready for the next stage of their lives and I hope to prepare them for all life's challenges (well, at least those they'll encounter in high school).
Second, I absolutely love teaching 7th graders! They are excited to learn and still have a youthful natural curiosity. It's the most surprising aspect of my new job!
I plan to use this blog to document some of my "experiments" with new literacies in the classroom and kind of keep track of what I've read and studied. Maybe this will be a solid piece of documentation when that dissertation writing comes along....
